Sutter Oaks Girl Scouts Scarecrow Contest

Sutter Oaks Service Unit organized their first Girl Scout Scarecrow Decorating Contest at Zittel Farms in Folsom. More than 125 girls participated in the contest and created fifteen scarecrows in all. The scarecrows were assembled on site and displayed for the entire month of October. The hand-made scarecrows showcased the girls’ creativity and were dressed in various costumes such as a cowgirl, soccer player, hip-hop dancer, a recycled gardener, and more. Judges picked four winners including a traditional scarecrow, Audrey from the film The Lorax, a Daisy Girl Scout, and Katniss Everdeen from the film Hunger Games. Each winning troop received a $25 gift card to Michaels arts and crafts stores. “The girls had a great time setting up their scarecrows,” said Michele Piazzoni, Sutter Oaks Service Unit Manager, “And it was amazing that each one turned out completely unique.” Michele shared her gratitude for the staff of Zittel Farms as great hosts. They were delighted that Zittel Farms has invited them to return next year to carry on this great new tradition. Additionally, many of the Girl Scouts who participated in the contest donated new and gently used books for the Folsom Cordova Unified School District literacy enrichment program, which is greatly in need of reading materials for the library and classrooms.
